Click 4 Life Performance at Toward Zero Death Conference

On October 28th, a small group of Click4Life/Ready4TheRoad students and staff were invited to perform at the annual Towards Zero Death (TZD) Conference in Duluth, Minnesota. The TZD Conference is sponsored by the Minnesota Departments of Public Safety and Transportation and invites law enforcers from across the state to discuss the 4 “E”s of safe driving practices: Engineering, Enforcement, Education, and Emergency Medical/Health Services. We got the crowd started and revved up for a 2-day forum to encourage safe driving in the state of Minnesota.

Since the Click 4 Life campaign has become so successful by completing their goals and getting the Primary Seat Belt Law passed, we have decided to create a new initiative. The new campaign is called Ready 4 The Road. This campaign is all about creating a safe place on the road by making sure drivers are ready and not distracted. We know that thousands of people are distracted while driving, and we want to eliminate it. During this campaign we have a few main goals that we want to accomplish.
1) To make sure drivers are Ready 4 The Road and not distraced.
2) To show the outcome of distracted driving and make awareness.
3) To influence new legislation that will create a safer place on the road for drivers.

The Primary Seat Belt bill is signed into law!!!!

Gov. Tim Pawlenty has signed the bill that will allow police in Minnesota to pull over drivers and occupants simply for not wearing their seat belts. As a result, many lives will be saved! The Click4Life team is incredibly proud of its role in helping to pass this important bill. We are tremendously thankful to State Farm for this incredible learning and service opportunity for our students and program. We are also thankful for all of the great partners we teamed up with over the last two years to make this day possible.

Youth Summit a Big Success • New Summits planned for 2009

Teens from St. Paul’s High School for Recording Arts hosted a Student Summit on teen driver safety this Friday at the University of Minnesota. Youth from six different schools met learn more about driver safety, seat bely law and community organizing and lobbying. Students helped lead workshops on Power Mapping, The Legislative Process and Team Building-One on One sessions . For more on student perspectives click here. Students Who Will Make Minnesota Safer

They travelled to Nashville to meet with the Meharry-State Farm Alliance team and beef up their knowledge about seat belts, roadway safety, and lobbying activity. That’s right: lobbying activity. High school students by day, radio and recording artists by night, these teens are students at the High School for Recording Arts in Minneapolis. Their partnership with the Alliance integrates their high school studies with their favorite public health issue, seat belt safety, and the result has been full-throttle campaigning for primary enforcement of Minnesota’s seat belt law. You’d be impressed by the students’ radio show, original music CD, web site, public rallies—all for seat belt safety. Go here to hear their music and here to read about “Click 4 Life.”

STUDENT LEGISLATIVE SUMMIT TO FOCUS ON TEEN DRIVER SAFETY

Teens from St. Paul’s High School for Recording Arts will host a Student Summit on teen driver safety this Friday at the University of Minnesota. For student perspectives click here.

The event, planned for students by students, is designed to help young people understand the legislative process, grasp the importance of primary seatbelt laws in Minnesota and raise awareness among communities and legislators.

Nearly 100 teens from five metro area high schools as well as the HSRA will attend the summit, scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, 301 19th Avenue South in Minneapolis. The summit was made possible with support from State Farm Insurance.

“High School for Recording Arts and The Fo-Show are proud to be a part of State Farm’s campaign to make Minnesota a primary seatbelt law state,” said Tony Simmons, Director of Development for HSRA. “Our students have heard the dire statistics and are now ready to spread the word to their peers all throughout the metropolitan area that seatbelts save lives. But most importantly, we need our legislators to also hear this message and to do their part to promote safe driving and to protect teens’ lives.”

Students at HSRA already have experience in raising awareness about teen driver safety and seatbelt use. The schools’ “Click 4 Life” project was created to make more teens aware of the dangers they face by not wearing seatbelts and to promote the movement to pass a primary seatbelt law in the state of Minnesota.

The summit is part of a new HSRA project to create a public awareness campaign focusing on teen driver safety and seatbelt use that targets their peers, communities and legislators. The students earned a $38,500 grant to create the Primary Seatbelt Campaign from the State Farm Good Neighbor Citizenship Program.

“As the nation’s number one insurer of vehicles, State Farm makes it a priority to promote teen driver safety through programs like this,” said State Farm spokeswoman Missy Youmans. “This type of service learning project gives teens the opportunity to inform their peers on the importance of safe driving habits in an innovative way that is both educational and rewarding.”

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for American teenagers. More than 5,600 young people ages 16-20 were killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2005, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In Minnesota alone, 62 young people were killed.

“We will take on this challenge like we usually do here at HSRA – using our student’s boundless creativity to educate ourselves and our community with vital information,” Simmons said. “This will be a great campaign and we are excited to share it with other high school students throughout Minnesota.”

HSRA Gets Busy for Click4Life

These activities include organizing students, training at the Humphrey Institute and meeting with State Farm officials and lobbyists. The thrust of this year’s activities is to pass the Primary Seat Belt Law in Minnesota.
